How do I test for water hardness?

Test water hardness with a test strip or with a reagent.

There are many ways to test water hardness. The easiest way is with a test strip.

  • Pass the test strip under a stream of water for 1 second, remove. Shake off excess water and wait per the test strip's directions (generally 5 to 30 seconds). Compare color change on the test pad to the color chart. 

Another way to test for water hardness is with a chemical reagent kit. Ultimate Water recommends the Taylor K2005 pool test kit to test all aspects of pool chemistry. Follow the directions in the kit to determine water hardness or see video below:
